What to Expect on Your First Dental Exam

Welcome to our practice! Your first visit is an important step toward achieving optimal oral health, and we’re here to make it a comfortable and informative experience. Here’s what you can expect during your initial dental exam:

Detailed Imaging

Your appointment will start with detailed photos of both the inside and outside of your mouth, allowing us to capture a comprehensive view of your dental structure. We’ll also take a CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) scan, which provides a precise 3D image of your teeth, jaws, and airway. This advanced imaging is invaluable for accurate diagnosis and personalized treatment planning.

Thorough Examination with Your Dentist

After imaging, you’ll meet with one of our experienced dentists for an in-depth examination and conversation. During this exam, your dentist will carefully review:

Teeth and Face Measurements: To assess alignment and identify any imbalances.

Muscle and Joint Evaluation: We’ll examine both intraoral and extraoral muscles, as well as your temporomandibular joint (TMJ), to detect any potential issues.

Soft Tissue Screening: A comprehensive check for any abnormalities in the gums, tongue, and other soft tissues.

Occlusion and Tooth Wear Analysis: Assessing how your teeth align and identifying any wear or grinding patterns.

Trauma Assessment: We’ll review any past injuries to the head, neck, or mouth that could affect your dental health.

Periodontal Health: A periodontal screening to evaluate gum health and detect signs of gum disease.

Sleep Apnea Evaluation: If needed, we’ll assess for oral indicators of sleep apnea to provide recommendations for further evaluation or treatment.

Important Note: No Cleaning During the First Exam

Please note that your first exam is solely focused on diagnostics and assessment. To ensure we fully understand your dental needs and plan personalized care, we do not perform a cleaning during this visit. A separate appointment will be scheduled for your cleaning after we’ve reviewed your complete oral health profile.

Your first exam is designed to give you a clear understanding of your oral health and outline any necessary treatments to keep your smile healthy and comfortable. We look forward to providing you with exceptional care and helping you feel at ease during every step of your visit.
